NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputies shot and killed a suspect in Central City on Monday after an incident that began at Oakwood Mall.

The shooting occurred at about 8 p.m. at Simon Bolivar Avenue and Philip Street. NOPD Chief Michael Harrison, JP Sheriff Newell Normand, Mayor Mitch Landrieu and the Orleans coroner all responded to the scene.

Sheriff Newell Normand said the incident started when one of his officers working a detail at the mall was approached by three women who reported that a man had brandished a weapon at them. When the detail officer went to speak to the man, the man refused to answer questions and took off running, Normand said.

Additional officers were called to assist and a car chase began. The suspect, who had a female passenger, led officers across the Crescent City Connection and into Orleans Parish. At some point, the driver lost control and his car came to a stop in the 2300 block of Simon Bolivar. When JP deputies pulled up behind the car and began to approach, the driver put the vehicle in reverse. Deputies then opened fire, killing the driver, Normand said. The female passenger sustained wounds from shattered glass and was taken to the hospital. Her condition is not known.

Normand said a gun was found on the floorboard of the suspect's car.

At one point during the investigation, several family members of the deceased showed up and broke through the crime scene tape trying to get to the victim. They had to be restrained by police.

The NOPD's Use of Force Task Force is leading the investigation.
