NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - The Orleans Parish coroner has released the identity of a man who was shot and killed Monday by Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputies.
The coroner said that Eric Harris, a 22-year-old black male, died from multiple gunshot wounds in the 2300 block of Simon Bolivar Avenue. Preliminary autopsy results revealed likely entrance wounds to the right armpit, the base of the neck, the left shoulder, and the right skull near the ear.
Four bullets and several fragments were recovered and placed into evidence with the New Orleans Police Department for possible ballistics testing. The coroner said the case has been preliminary medically classified as a homicide.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said at the time of Harris' death, he was on probation until June of 2018 for possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, simple escape and possession of heroin.
The patrol division officers involved in this incident are Henry Dejean, who was hired May 26, 2015; and Kenneth Bonura, who was hired March 14, 2014.
