Waggaman parents charged with murder after son dies from injuries

WAGGAMAN, LA (WVUE) - A 14-year-old boy who was allegedly beaten and hospitalized by his father has died, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

Jalen Daniel was taken to the hospital on Saturday in grave condition. He died on Wednesday.

Homicide investigators initially booked Furnell Daniel and Terri Daniel with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile. They will be re-booked with one count each of second-degree murder.

Officers responded to a medical call on Clifford Court in Waggaman, on Saturday around 12:22 p.m. The caller, identified as Furnell Daniels, said that his son fell in the bathtub and hit his head.

Jalen was taken to the hospital.

The father told officers that he paddled Jalen the day before for having poor grades. He told them that Jalen kept complaining of pain but he thought that Jalen was only saying that to avoid further punishment.

Once at the hospital, deputies learned Jalen suffered multiple bruises, contusions, lacerations and abrasions on his arms, legs, torso and head and had a splinter above his right eye.

Detectives learned that the victim was hit several times with a paddle and after falling down, he would continue getting hit.

Police say Jalen began vomiting and urinating on himself Saturday morning. He became unresponsive.

While being questioned, Furnell invoked his right to an attorney while Terri admitted to knowing about the incident but was unaware of the extent of the injuries.
