NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

One of New Orleans' most famous couples are celebrating their 22nd Valentine's Day this weekend.

Kohl and Zelda, two African blackfooted penguins in the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas first mated 22 years ago. Though many penguins mate for life,  the Audubon Aquarium's Senior Aviculturist Tom Dyer says it doesn't always work out.

"While most species of penguins mate for life, there is still a divorce rate," Dyer said. "We've seen our share of penguin heartbreak, infidelity and sometimes joyful reunion here in our colony. Kohl and Zelda, however, are spending their 22nd Valentine's Day together. They are Audubon's sweethearts."

African blackfooted penguins are native to Southern African and are known for their black face mask, black spots and "horseshoe" on their belly. The Audubon Aquarium says that they earned the nickname the "jackass penguin" for their donkey-like bray.

Since opening in 1990, the Audubon Aquarium has hatched 54 penguins.
