(WVUE) - Brother Martin and De La Salle took home state titles in wrestling over the weekend and made some history in the process.
Brother Martin won its fifth-consecutive state title in the Division I ranks. The Crusaders finished with 304.5 points, ahead of Jesuit (268), Holy Cross (228.5), Comeaux (189.5) and St. Paul's (186.5).
De La Salle won its first state title in wrestling since 1971. The last time the Cavaliers won a state title of any kind was in 1994 when they beat Jesuit in soccer 3-2.
The Cavs were no doubt fired up about the accomplishment.
"It means a lot to the school," said junior Raekwon Thomas to Nola.com, who finished in third at 132 pounds. "I heard back in the day that we used to be really good at wrestling. It means a lot to bring back that tradition and we're going to strive on from here and keep getting better."
