BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

In the words of state leaders, it is more bad news. This year's immediate shortfall that must be closed by the end of the special session just grew an extra $17 million because Gustav FEMA money won't come this year.

Commissioner Jay Dardenne made the announcement just after 9 a.m. Monday morning.

He says Louisiana was expected to pocket $17 million from FEMA this year for damages back in 2008 from Hurricane Gustav.

The commissioner says that will happen, but it won't be this year, so add that $17 million to the already massive $940 million deficit.

"Another thing I want to point out to you is more bad news.  That is another addition to proposed solutions set forth in November that have not materialized," said Dardenne.

Elsewhere at the Capitol, Governor Edwards is proposing to raise taxes on most types of alcohol for the first time since 1948, nearly 70 years.

Notice the tax on beer would increase from $10 a barrel to more than $13 a barrel.
