NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - The Blood Center puts out an urgent call for O-negative blood.
According to a news release, the Blood Center is currently at critical levels for type O-negative blood.
Since O-negative is universal and can be used for any patient, it is often used in trauma treatment when a patient's blood type is unknown.
Supplies of A-negative and B-negative are also low.
Blood Center public relations director Paul Adams says area hospitals need more than 300 units blood daily.
The Blood Center collects blood to serve more than 40 area hospital in south Louisiana and Mississippi.
