4 squatters arrested for trespassing in Bywater home

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - New Orleans police officers arrested three men and a woman Tuesday for criminal trespassing after they allegedly took over a vacant house in the Bywater.

Frederick Hines was trying to sell his home in the 3400 block of North Rampart St., but he said a group of people broke in before Mardi Gras, changed the locks and even abused the realtor.

The squatters put up a "no trespassing" sign and a notation indicating they are part of a group called the Washitaw Mu'ur Nation.

They told police they were the owners of the land. The group claimed ancient land rights in Louisiana, and they have been investigated by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

New Orleans police said two of the suspects provided names on the scene. They are 24-year-old Devin Garner and 18-year-old Danamaria Thornton. The others were not identified.
