NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - The NOPD braces for a shift in manpower. Starting February 21, 94 more officers will work the street.
The police department is adding patrols for officers who currently work desk jobs or as mechanics. The department plans to hire civilians to take over those positions. "We're taking officers from one set of duties and putting them back to citizens' calls for service. We get it. You asked for the help. You asked for the officers. You wanted more officers. Now, now we're giving them to you," said Superintendent Michael Harrison when he announced the restructuring plan in January.
The restructuring effort is designed to help decrease lagging response times.
