NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

Tulane starting pitching combined to give up no runs this weekend against Illinois, but the Wave bullpen wasn't so lucky.

Emerson Gibbs went six-plus innings of scoreless ball today, and gave a 2-0 lead to the relievers. The staff gave up five earned runs, giving Illinois a 5-2 victory.

The Wave still won the series thanks to 6-5, and 3-0 triumphs on Friday and Saturday.

Illinois collected four hits in the top of the eighth while scoring three two-out runs to capture the lead before tacking on two more in the top of the ninth off a two-run double by Matthew James. Illinois closer Nick Blackburn came on for the save in the bottom of the ninth, retiring all three Green Wave batters in order.

One bright spot on the hitting front for Tulane was the play of Hunter Hope. The junior hit a mammoth blast off the scoreboard to give the Wave a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth.

Tulane returns to action Wednesday night at home against Alabama A&M.

As if there was any doubt who our No. 1 player on the countdown would be. Drew Brees may be 39, but he's still the straw that stirs the drink for the New Orleans Saints. The best to ever don the Black and Gold, signed a two-year contract this offseason with the club. Extending his career just a couple of more seasons. 2018 could be historic year for Brees. He sits just 1,495 yards away from passing Peyton Manning on the NFL all-time leading passer list. The team he leads, is also a...more>>
