Mo Tom reaches top five of Kentucky Derby standings

Mo Tom finished third in the Risen Star Stakes. Mo Tom finished third in the Risen Star Stakes.
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

Mo Tom's third place finish in the Risen Star Stakes this past Saturday, bumped him up to fourth in the Kentucky Derby standings. The top 20 in the standings get qualify for the Derby.

Mo Tom is currently fourth in the standings with 22 points. First place is Gun Runner, who won the Risen Star Stakes, with 51 points.

Mo Tom suffered a minor gash in the race when he was crossed by another horse, but his trainer Tom Amoss says he's in good shape. Telling the Fair Grounds, "We're very fortunate."

In the AP's Derby top ten, Mo Tom entered for the first time all year. Saying the only change in this week's Top 10 is Mo Tom moving in at No. 7 after a gutty third-place finish despite being jostled and cutting his right front leg during the stretch run of Saturday's Risen Star at the Fair Grounds.

Mo Tom runs under the GMB Racing stable. GMB is owned by Gayle Benson, wife of New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson.

Next up for Mo Tom is the Louisiana Derby on March 26th. If Mo Tom finishes fourth, gaining him 10 points, he would be qualified for the Derby with 32 points.

Alvin Kamara did it all last season for Sean Payton's offense, and that's why he's No. 2 on our ranking the Saints countdown. Kamara burst onto the scene, mesmerized saints fans, and the entire NFL with his unique running style. His stat line, amazing: 728 yards rushing, averaged over six yards per carry, with  eight touchdowns. He also added 81 catches with five touchdowns. All the while playing just 45 percent of the Saints offensive snaps. Kamara ran away with the NFL's Off...more>>
