A bill to raise the state's sales tax a penny has passed the Louisiana House floor Thursday.

The 'clean penny' sales tax from State Rep. Katrina Jackson, D-Monroe, passed the House of Representatives with a vote of 76-27.

The bill adds a penny to the state's already existing 4-cent sales tax. The hike was amended to end after 18 months.

It would bring in an immediate $220 million. That's nearly two-thirds of all proposed new tax money from Gov. John Bel Edwards. The governor's entire proposal depends on it.

The House also passed a bill designed to push sales tax collection from online companies with an offline presence in Louisiana.

The bills will now go to the Senate.
