Four-alarm fire guts home just off Magazine Street

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

Four pets were killed and several people displaced by a four-alarm house fire just off Magazine Street Saturday morning.

According to the New Orleans Fire Department, a five-unit, camel-back house in the 1000 block of Louisiana Avenue was engulfed in flames just after 2 a.m.

First responders first received the call around 2:01 a.m. and arrived on the scene five minutes later. Overall, 24 NOFD units carrying 69 NOFD Fire Operations and support personnel were on the scene to battle the blaze.

Fire fighters had the fire under control at 3:42 a.m. according to NOFD.

At it's peak, the fire spread to a neighboring unoccupied building and caused extensive damaged to the house's rear and attic. A neighboring business on Magazine street also received light damage due to radiating heat.

All seven residents escaped safely, according to NOFD, but three dogs and a cat died due to smoke inhalation in the fire. The American Red Cross is supplying temporary shelter for the residents displaced by the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The NOFD's full timeline for the fire is as follows:
