NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

Seven Irish Channel residents are homeless after flames engulfed their building early Saturday morning. The fire also killed four pets.

“My heart is so heavy for her, she’s such a good person,” Whitney Burton said of her close friend Saturday.

Burton’s friend lost everything she owned plus her three pets after a fire ripped through her one-bedroom apartment.

“It's really sad she's lived there a long time. Her animals are her babies so you know she's beyond devastated. Yeah, it's just really sad,” Burton commented.

Seven people lived in the five unit building on Louisiana Avenue, just off Magazine Street. Neighbors say they heard sirens around 2 a.m. The flames even extended to a single family home next to the original unit. It took more than 69 firefighters nearly two hours to contain the fire.

Neighbor Ailyn Jememc comments, “I didn’t realize it was a big fire like that.”

Daylight allowed neighbors to see the full destruction, as firefighters spent hours dousing the structures with water, extinguishing hot spots.

“That’s so sad, this happened you know, it’s so hard,” Jememc said.

Friends of the victims are helping to pick up the pieces, using social media.

Burton explains, “I asked the fireman if they had found anything or if they got in time and they said that everything was gone, everything was destroyed. She has absolutely nothing left. I went ahead and set up a go fund me account for her this morning.”

The victim's friends and neighbors vow their support in the tough hours and days ahead, as seven people are now without a place to call home.

Investigators haven't yet released a cause for the fire. The Red Cross is assisting victims with housing.
