BATON ROUGE, LA (WVUE) -

The president of LSU on Monday warned that budget cuts could mean trouble for Tiger football.

F. King Alexander said that if the university has to cancel summer school, Tiger fans would see the side effect on the field this fall. And he said other universities are using LSU's budget uncertainty as a recruiting tool.

"For us to go in front of you and say football will be damaged by this - and I know a bunch of people said, ‘well that's not gonna happen.’ That will happen,” Alexander said. “If we don't have summer schools, we'll have only half of our football team eligible. It's not us saying that – it’s the NCAA telling us that."

And it’s not just athletics. Alexander warns that if lawmakers can't find a way to avoid the planned 35 percent mid-semester cut, LSU's medical schools will not be able to make payroll in May.
