NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

Early voting for Saturday's Presidential Preference Primary election on Saturday wrapped up last week with a big voter turnout.

The Orleans Parish Registrar of Voter's Office says more people early voted in-person for this presidential primary than did in 2008 and 2012 combined.

In 2008, the early in-person total was 1,275. In 2012, the figure was 3,322. This year, the early in-person voting total was 8,488.

The registrar's office says it mailed out about 4,504 paper ballot and many of those of just getting sent back to their office now. The absentee ballot vote will combine the in-person early voters with the paper ballots.

Jefferson Parish saw a similar increase in early voters for presidential primary. Officials say in 2012 1,341 people early voted. This year, that figure was 5,296.

On Saturday, March 5 Louisiana republican and democratic voters will decide on the state's presidential primary.
Only registered members of those parties can vote in that election.
