PAINCOURTVILLE, LA (WVUE) -

Assumption Parish deputies arrested a man during a traffic stop after they said he had a stolen gun and drugs.

Montel Harris, 23, of Napoleonville, was arrested Friday in Paincourtville.

The Sheriff said a K-9 sergeant was assigned to a traffic point blocking the roadway due to tornado damage. A vehicle attempted to go through the barricades but was stopped by the officer.

Deputies said Harris was the driver. After getting out of the vehicle, Harris allegedly acted nervously and would not stand still. As a second K-9 officer approached the scene, Harris took off running.

Deputies said the second officer was able to arrest him after a brief foot pursuit. The first officer stayed with the vehicle and the 8-year-old child in the back seat.

Deputies said they found a plastic baggie with suspected methamphetamine inside, a baggie with marijuana, a pill bottle with approximately 51 suspected Xanax, two digital scales and a 9-mm Glock with extended 30-round magazine.

Deputies said they learned the gun was stolen from Ascension Parish when they ran its serial number.

Harris was booked in the Assumption Parish Detention Center for resisting an officer, multiple drug charges, illegal possession of a stolen firearm, illegal carrying of a weapon in the presence of a child and child desertion.
