Mt. Carmel, Denham Springs advance to 5A championship game

FOX 8 FOX 8
HAMMOND, LA (WVUE) -

You’d be hard pressed to find some better shooting than that on display from Natchitoches Central and Mount Carmel Academy in the 5A semifinal. However, it was the Cubs with the hot hand late to advance to the championship game.

Mount Carmel’s Paige Franckiewicz caught fire and hit five three-pointers to go with her game-high 21 points. Fellow Cub Megan Donaldson added three of her own from long range. When asked about her performance and which shooter is her favorite to watch, the answer was easy.

“Steph Curry,” says Franckiewicz. “He’s so confident. He comes down the court like he’s just shooting in the backyard. He lets it fly like it’s no big deal. He makes it look so easy.”

So did the Cubs on a 30-1 run that sealed the game for them in the third and fourth quarters.

Meanwhile, Mandeville couldn’t find a rhythm soon enough against Denham Springs. The Lady Jackets fell to the Yellow Jackets 47-35. They trailed 15-5 less than two minutes into the second quarter and struggled to shoot their way out of the hole.

Mount Carmel will face Denham Springs on Friday at 8 p.m. in the 5A championship game. The Cubs chase their second state title in three years.

Today's work was much lighter between the Saints and Chargers was much lighter. They wore no pads only shells and helmets, and they only practiced two hours instead of two and a half like Thursday. While they certainly weren't perfect, overall the Saints had much better execution today than Thursday.  "I thought overall it was a little bit crisper today than yesterday.
