HAMMOND, LA (WVUE) -

The I-55 matchup is back for its first edition of 2016 in Hammond. The Lions and Green Wave will meet twice this season. Wednesday night's winner will have some bragging rights, but there's so much more these teams are playing for.

For the first time in seven years, Tulane made the NCAA tourney in 2015. After making the tourney in 2014, SLU missed out in 2015. Part of the reason the Wave got that bid was sweeping the Lions. SLU is a quality program, and taking three games from them was a major decider. It also hurt the Lions tourney chances by getting swept by Tulane.

"The rivalry is about two teams that have good history, and two teams that are well coached. The kids know each other, a lot of the kids know each other. They're an hour from us. We've had competitive games, and they've won their share of games as well as us. That's what makes the rivalry," said Tulane Head Coach David Pierce.
