Four people suffered injuries as New Orleans firefighters battled an early Thursday morning blaze in the Bayou St. John area.

Crews arrived in the 800 block of Moss St. at 2:21 a.m. to find one apartment unit engulfed in flames. More than two dozen residents were evacuated from their homes.

The complex contains 30 separate apartment units, and several  sustained smoke and water damage.

Two women were treated on the scene and refused transport to the hospital.

Two firefighters were injured when they both fell from the second floor balcony of the apartment while retrieving salvage covers used to protect property in the apartments. Both were taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

A total of 20 firefighters worked less than an hour to put out the flames. The incident was under the control at 2:51 a.m. One cat was rescued from an apartment unit.
