HOUMA, LA (WVUE) -

A Houma man dragged a Louisiana state trooper from the side of his vehicle after he refused to cooperate at a sobriety checkpoint Thursday night, according to Houma Police Department reports.

The driver, identified as Ashley Harris, 34, smelled strongly of marijuana while passing through the checkpoint. Officers stopped Harris just before 11 p.m., near the east exit of the Houma Tunnel.

During questioning, officers say Harris discarded what they suspected was crack cocaine. He then reportedly took off in his Chevrolet pickup truck, while dragging a state police trooper who was standing next to the driver's side door.

Houma Police say the trooper was dragged a short distance. Harris then jumped out of his truck and led police on a brief foot chase. The trooper suffered minor injuries.

Harris was booked on several charges, including attempted first degree murder of a police officer and aggravated flight from an officer.

Bond has not yet been set.
