NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

The Monumental Task Force Committee on Friday praised a state senator for pre-filing a bill that would protect historic monuments.

Beth Mizell's bill calls for the creation of a state historical commission to make sure that memorials referencing historic conflicts, events or figures could not be removed, renamed or altered.

The MTFC opposes the city's decision to remove Confederate-era monuments from New Orleans.

The City Council declared the monuments a public nuisance in December, but the removal process hasn't started due to reports of threats against possible contractors.
