Grand Isle Garden Club plants trees lost to hurricanes.

GRAND ISLE, LA (WVUE) -

The newly formed Grand Isle Garden Club is raising awareness and support to replace trees lost to storms and beautify and strengthen the environment of Grand Isle.

“Recent hurricanes and the BP Oil Spill have taken a toll on Grand Isle’s quality of life and our environment. To combat this, Grand Isle’s newly formed nonprofit is raising money to plant wind and drought resistant palm trees along our main street, Highway 1. These palms will replace trees lost to storms and will beautify and strengthen the environment of Grand Isle,” said Jean Landry, Garden Club member and Nature Conservancy program coordinator.

As Louisiana’s only inhabited barrier island, Grand Isle is an important seafood hub and plays a vital role as the state’s first line of defense against hurricanes. It’s also an important habitat for marine species and songbirds, including shorebirds, waders and migratory birds.

The Garden Club has met with agriculture specialists from Louisiana State University to make sure they are getting the correct trees and have made contact with nurseries that will be able to deliver the trees this spring.
