Abita Springs teen arrested for allegedly killing dad

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of killing his father in their Abita Springs home.

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain announced the arrest Wednesday afternoon in connection with the weekend homicide of James “Kenny” Hamilton.

Authorities are not releasing the name of the suspect because of his age, but investigators have confirmed that he is Hamilton's son.

Hamilton was discovered dead in his home on Lenel Road on March 7. The St. Tammany Parish coroner said Hamilton died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Following an investigation, the sheriff's office issued a warrant for the teen's arrest. The warrant, signed by 22nd J.D.C. Judge Raymond Childress, charges the teenager with one count of second-degree murder.

Deputies determined that the suspect had left Abita Springs and traveled to the Lake Charles area over the course of the last few days.  The sheriff’s office worked with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s office, as well as the juvenile’s attorney, to arrange for his surrender this afternoon.

The juvenile was turned in by his grandmother and his attorney this afternoon, an arrangement that investigators say is common for wanted suspects surrendering themselves to authorities.  He is being booked in Calcasieu parish as a fugitive from St. Tammany  Parish and eventually will be transported there to be booked with the murders.

After receiving the entire case file from the sheriff’s office, the St. Tammany Parish District Attorney’s Office will decide whether to try the 16-year-old as a juvenile or as an adult.
