METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) -

Starting at 9 a.m., the Jefferson Parish Streets Department will be placing barricades on roads in the event they are needed due to flooding from heavy rains.

Parish officials say no roads are currently blocked. The barricades are only being placed on the curbs and median as a precaution.

Those areas that have barricades ready to go include:

  • Elmwood
  • Transcontinental
  • Severn
  • West Esplanade
  • Parts of Old Metairie
  • Unspecified streets on the Westbank

Drivers are reminded that the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Management will be out in high-water vehicles.

Motorists caught driving around barricades will be ticketed and could face fines as high as $500.

Drivers should also watch out for manhole covers popping up due to high water.

All canals have been pumped down and debris removed.

Enforcement will be ramped up as conditions deteriorate.
