Sandbag locations: Area parishes offer residents tools to prepare for heavy rains

Area parishes are getting ready for the heavy storm heading to our area this evening.

St. Charles Parish officials are urging residents to monitor weather reports and prepare for heavy rain over the next few days by clearing drains and ditches around their homes and reporting any debris piles or blocked culverts.

Residents should take in garbage cans and other items that could blow into drainage ditches.

Parish workers will continue to inspect and clean ditches, catch basins and drainage infrastructure parish wide.


  • The Department of Public Works has prepared sandbagging locations around the parish. Residents are advised to bring a shovel in order to make their own bags. For a list of pickup locations visit and click 'hurricane preparedness' or click here

  • St. Tammany Parish has designated sandbag distribution sites:
  • St. Tammany Parish Government- Building C 21410 Koop Dr., Mandeville
  • St. Tammany Parish Public Works- Covington Barn 1305 N. Florida St., Covington
  • St. Tammany Parish Public Works- Airport Road Barn 34783 Grantham College Rd., Slidell
  • St. Tammany Parish Public Works- Fritchie Barn 63119 Louisiana 1090 in Pearl River
  • St. Tammany Parish Public Works Barn- Keller Barn 63131 Fish Hatchery Road, Lacombe

These sites are open today until 7 p.m. and tomorrow 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

The St. John Public Works Department and Utilities department is making preparations for possible severe weather by checking all pump stations, lift stations and drainage canals. Residents should report any emergencies including drainage issues and street flooding to 911.

Residents are asked to secure garbage cans and any yard debris as best as they can and pick up tree branches to keep them out of drains.

Residents should call 9-1-1 to report drainage, sewage or flooding problems. Please use caution when going outdoors or driving in heavy rainfall and refrain from driving through standing water.

The Hancock County Mississippi Emergency Management Agency will have sand and sand bags at the following locations at 12 p.m. on March 10, 2016.

  • Lakeshore Community Center, 6440 Lower Bay Road, Lakeshore
  • County Complex, 3068 Long Fellow Drive
  • Hancock County Horse Arena,  4184 Kiln/Delisle Road

Lafourche Parish residents can now obtain sandbags at the six barns throughout the parish.  There is a limit to 25 sandbags per address. Barn locations are:

Terrebonne Parish President Gordon Dove has instructed the Parish’s Public Works Division to provide sand and sand bags for those residents who wish to prepare for the possibility of flooding from the severe weather event that may affect Terrebonne Parish through Saturday with excessive rainfall.
Sand and sand bags will be available to residents for self-filling at the following locations beginning at 1PM today. Residents are encouraged to bring their own shovel to fill the sand bags.

The City of Slidell is setting up sandbag stations at the following locations:

Lee Street

The tennis courts at Second Street and Cleveland Avenue in Olde Towne

The parking lot on the corner of Rue Rochelle and Independence Drive

John Slidell Park

Sandbag locations will be open until 7 p.m. tonight and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is a limit of 15 sandbags per household.

Washington Parish is making sandbags available to the public at the following locations:

WP Public Works #1, 801 Pearl St Franklinton 

WP Public Works #2, 7 Mile Rd & Hwy 10 (Yacc Bldg)

WP Fire District #7, 17380 Bill Booty Road, Bogalusa

Parish officials advise the public to bring their shovels since the sandbags will not be prefilled.
