ST. TAMMANY PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

St. Tammany Parish President Pat Brister called for a voluntary evacuation around Three Rivers Road today as flood waters remain unpredictable.

The parish released a statement Saturday morning asking residents in the low-laying areas around Three Rivers Road, North of I-12 to Ronald Reagan Highway, South to Madisonville on the East side to 190 and on the West side to Highway 21 to consider evacuating.

The National Weather Service is assessing the area around the converging rivers (The Bogue Falaya, Tchefuncte and Abita). Neighbors along both sides of all three rivers should be aware of possible flooding Saturday as the rivers crest.

More detailed information will be made available as soon as the NWS finishes their assessment.

Friday, St. Tammany Parish officials warned residents north of Covington, particularly along Million Dollar Rd. in the area between Land-o-Pines and Hwy. 25, to pay close attention to water levels.

They suggested evacuating their home as soon as possible if they saw waters rising.

Emergency shelters are open in St. Tammany Parish at the following locations

  • The Magnolia Center, 13296 Hwy 40 in Folsom.
  • Covington High School gym, 73030 Lion Drive off of US 190 in Covington.

“We encourage residents to stay up-to-date on the forecast, and to cooperate with requests from emergency officials,” Parish President Pat Brister said. “We encourage you to stay home and off of the streets if it is not necessary for you to be out, and to obey any traffic signs and barricades indicating impassable roads and high water. If you feel that you are in danger, please make the decision to evacuate out of harm’s way. If you need assistance doing so, call 911.”

Other areas are being evaluated, and as the day progresses there might be recommendations for evacuations in the area.
