PEARL RIVER, LA (WVUE) -

The Pearl River Police Department is "strongly urging" residents to leave the Shingle Mill Road area by 3 p.m. today (March 13) before severe flooding is expected to hit the area.

Officials with the Pearl River Town Hall say Shingle Mill Road will go under water.

Several other low lying areas, including Craddock Lane, Hwy 3081 by Craddock Lane, Nelson and Frierson Roads, Pine Street, Spur 41 at both bridges, possibly Banks Street, the 2nd & 3rd Pearl River Exits under the Over Pass, are also expected to flood and should be evacuated.

Several roads will be closed as the day continue, according to officials. Drivers should not ignore and go around barricades. As the saying goes, "Turn around, don't drown."

Craddock Lane residents will be able to park in the church parking lot to keep their vehicles safe and hopefully above flood waters. Town officials say Nelson and Frierson Road residents may park along the railroad tracks to do the same.

Residents living on Spur 41 will need to exit by St. Peter and Paul Church on St. Mary Street due to road closures, according to officials.

A sand bag location for residents opened behind Pearl River Town Hall by the water tower at 7 a.m. this morning.

Any Pearl River residents that need to evacuate with handicapped or wheelchair bound people are asked to contact the police department at 985-863-5711 for assistance.
