ST. TAMMANY PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

All St. Tammany Parish Public School System schools and school offices will be closed on Monday because of flooding.

District leaders said after close consultation with the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Parish leaders, including Parish President Pat Brister, there are ongoing concerns about the rise of the Pearl River, road closures and continued cleanup efforts from the flooding.

"This historic flooding has impacted our community in many ways. Our thoughts are with those people who are suffering through this tragedy,” said Superintendent W. L. "Trey" Folse, III. "We are continuing to work with St. Tammany Parish officials and the Office of Emergency Preparedness to determine how to best move forward this upcoming week. We know there is the potential for more flooding in our parish and we are monitoring the situation closely."

The school district said school employees are among the thousands of people affected by the flooding and some are unable to work at this time. This impacts the district’s ability to provide transportation and fully staffed schools. While cleanup efforts continue on the west side of the parish, there is the potential for further flooding on the east side of the parish that could impact roads and communities.

"Thank you to everyone for your cooperation and patience during this difficult time," said Folse. "As a School System family, we will work together to get through this weather emergency."
