With the fastest rising draft stock since the week of the Senior Bowl, linebacker Deion Jones was already the main attraction coming into LSU’s pro day. Then he ran the 40-yard dash and set the turf and the buzz around his talent on fire unofficial times of 4.38 seconds and 4.39 seconds.
Former teammates Jalen Mills and Lamar Louis say they weren’t at all surprised about the time. Jones says when he clocked a 4.59 time at the NFL combine, he knew he was faster.
But that speed comes with a price: size. In a more lean frame, Jones weighed in around 220 pounds. He says his playing weight was closer to 227, and now he plans to build back up a little bit. Either way, it doesn’t seem to bother any of the teams Jones spoke with so far.
“A lot of teams haven’t really been pressing the whole size thing,” says Jones. “I’ve just been trying to focus on the task at hand and taking it one day at a time, and what happens, happens.”
It’s also worth noting that Jones was scheduled for dinner Monday evening with members of the New Orleans Saints organization. It’s been six years since they’ve drafted a player from LSU.
