JEFFERSON PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

A Chauvin man admitted to stabbing his girlfriend 44 times during an argument over cigarettes, according to prosecutors.

The Jefferson Parish District Attorney's Office said Randy Paul Marcel, 29, pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder, knowing that he would receive an automatic sentence of life in prison.

According to police, on June 21, 2014, Marcel argued with Jennifer Dozier about several topics, during a trip to Grand Isle. At some point, he allegedly knocked Dozier, an amputee, to the ground. Prosecutors said when she told Marcel she was calling police and moved towards their vehicle, he stabbed her.

Police found the 34-year-old's body in a beach parking area along Cypress Lane and LA 1; her aluminum crutches were nearby. The coroner's office said Dozier was stabbed 44 times, including 10 times in the head and five times in her neck. Two of the stab wounds punctured her brain.

Investigators said Marcel ran after the attack and hid in the grass. He initially told detectives he blacked out, then claimed he stabbed Dozier twice in self-defense. Marcel's cousin and a friend witnessed the attack. Dozier's two-year-old son was also present during the incident

Marcel was set to go to trial this week but entered a guilty plea before potential jurors were questioned.

The District Attorney's Office said Marcel wept during sentencing but did not address Dozier's family.
