Suspect drowns while trying to swim across Bayou Fourchon

LAFOURCHE PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

Detectives said a man who tried to steal a generator later drowned in Bayou Lafourche while trying to get away.

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office discovered the body of Michael Gonzales, 37, Friday morning.

A Golden Meadow resident told investigators that he left his home on East Main Street around 5:40 a.m. and saw Gonzales trying to steal a small generator from a carport. Investigators said Gonzales ran away, carrying the generator, but later dropped it and ran into the bayou. A witnesses reported seeing Gonzales try to swim across the bayou, but he never resurfaced.

Water patrol deputies and the Port Fourchon Harbor Police recovered Gonzales' body.
