JEFFERSON PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

A Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Deputy was injured after a shoplifting suspect runs over her foot with a car, while trying to get away. The incident occurred Monday around 12:34 p.m. at a craft store located in the 1600 block of Westbank Expressway in Harvey.

Police say that Deputy Sebrina Howard responded to a shoplifting call at the business and met with the store's loss prevention officer. The officer told Howard that 35-year-old Renata Robertson of New Orleans stole merchandise from within the store and hid it in her purse.

When confronted by the officer, Robertson handed over the purse and said that she left a young child, alone, in her car in the parking lot. She then asked to go and get the child. The officer and Deputy Howard escorted Robertson to her car and as they approached the vehicle, the officer and Howard noticed that there were no children in the car.

Robertson then quickly got into the car, started it and began to drive away in reverse. Howard, who was standing in the doorway of the car, told Robertson to stop while trying to grab her.

Robertson quickly drove backwards, knocking Deputy Howard to the ground. The front driver's side wheel began to roll over Howard's foot but she was able to free it before suffering serious injuries, police say.

The loss prevention officer was able to jump into the driver's seat and press the brake pedal while detaining Robertson.

Howard called for additional help from other units, who arrived on scene and took Robertson into custody. Deputy Howard was treated on scene for an injury to her foot.

Robertson was booked in Jefferson Parish jail on one count each of shoplifting, aggravated battery and resisting arrest by police. She has multiple previous arrests and traffic attachments, according to police.
