Kenner firefighters battled a blaze in the 700 block of Oxley Street.

The building is a Mardi Gras float den. The building is owned by McKinley Cantrell Floats, LLC.

Huge clouds of smoke and a strong burning smell were apparent from Louis Armstrong International Airport, about a mile away.

There were several floats outside the hangar style building involved in the fire. Several floats outside say Irish-Italian parade. There are others inside that appear to be badly damaged and at least one that seems to be destroyed.

Firefighters are working to put the hot spots out with several fire trucks on the scene. Earlier firefighters brought in construction equipment to knock down the garage door.

Kenner police and several ambulances were on scene, but there are no injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but firefighters said it looked suspicious.

Iris Captain Kristin Danflous sent the following statement about the fire:

Dear Krewe of Iris Friends,

Most of you have heard already that there was a fire set this morning at the Cantrell Den where some of the Iris floats we rent are stored, no one was hurt but there was damage to the building and a few of the floats.  There are 9 floats in the den and 4 had fire damage.  None of these floats were owned by the Krewe.   The rest of our floats remain unharmed in another den.   The police and fire department are investigating the cause of the fire but I have no further details.  I have included some pictures I took this morning and the Kenner press release.

I would also like to say thank you for the calls, texts, emails, Facebook posts etc., they mean a lot to myself, my officers and the Krewe.  The Mardi Gras community along with the people of New Orleans are a special group of men and women and we always find a way to support one another during tough times.  There is no place like NOLA!!  Now... we are going to move forward on rebuilding the damaged den and the damaged floats and are going to have the best 100th year Celebration imaginable.

Hail Iris!!!
