NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation Tuesday kicked off a new project to try and restore Pontchartrain Beach to its former glory.

They have acquired the rights to 17,000 tons of white sand that they hope will be used to replace the old sand at the old Pontchartrain Beach site. There is a catch though.

The foundation must raise $40,000 to move the sand from an Industrial Canal site by April 30.

The sand had been earmarked for a fracking project on the North Shore that was put on hold.
