TANGIPAHOA PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

Louisiana State Troopers are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash, involving a garbage truck. The incident occurred Tuesday, just after 7:30 p.m. on Highway 442 in Tangipahoa Parish.

Police say that 64-year-old Edward W. Stewart of Independence was driving a pickup truck east on Hwy 442. Ahead of Stewart and also traveling east was a garbage truck, driven by 40-year-old Christi Nicole Davis of Kentwood. Davis stopped her truck on the side of the road to collect trash. For reasons unknown, Stewart failed to notice the stopped vehicle and crashed into the rear of the garbage truck.

According to police, Stewart was not wearing a seat belt and suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office pronounced Stewart dead on the scene. Joel Nathaniel Figueroa, 33, of Hammond, who was collecting the garbage near the back of the garbage truck, suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash. He was transported to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond via Air-Med. He is listed in critical condition.

Investigators do not believe that impairment played a role in the crash, but troopers took blood samples both drivers as part of the investigation process. The Louisiana State Police Crime Lab will analyze the samples.
