BATON ROUGE, LA (WVUE) -

When the water recedes and rebuilding from the recent floods begins, property owners are being urged to prevent the spread of termites.

Louisiana Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain says home and business owners should consider contacting a pest control company to service flooded structures since they are prone to termite infestation.

"If your community flooded and soil around your home or business washed away, the applied termiticide barrier may no longer exist and the area may need to be retreated," Strain said. "Termite bait stations need to be evaluated for replacement as well.  If you have a termite contract, you should contact your pest control company for an inspection."

Strain says termite treatment can be done either before, during or after construction. He added some owners may choose to rebuild with termite-treated or termite-resistant products.

"Consumers should contact the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry at 225-925-4578 to make sure the pesticide company you hire is fully certified and licensed. This protects you, your family, your home or your business," said Strain.
