NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

The New Orleans Fire Department is investigating a hazardous material spill near the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal.

Firefighters responded to Chef Hwy. and France Rd. shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday where they found an overturned chemical tanker truck.

The truck was carrying approximately 9,000 gallons of a highly corrosive chemical called methacrylic acid.

First responders were still trying to contain the leak at 2 p.m.

No chemicals have entered into the waterways, according to the NOFD.

Kingsmill trucking company is working to upright the tanker. Oil Mop Industrial is on the scene to continue the mitigation of the incident.

Firefighters do not expect the leak to escalate in severity.

The NOFD did not say what caused the tanker to overturn. There is no word on injuries.
