BATON ROUGE, LA (WVUE) -

LSU Baseball Coach Paul Mainieri's annual tradition of trotting out several different pitchers during midweek games appears to be bearing fruit in 2016.

Tuesday night against UL-Lafayette, freshman Cole McKay got his first start and while he got off to a rough start by allowing a runner to score on a wild pitch, he settled down to strike out five batters in two innings pitched. From there, seven other pitchers combined to hold the hard-hitting Ragin' Cajuns to four runs on four hits.

For the season, Mainieri has nine pitchers who have pitched at least nine innings after last night. "Alden Cartwright, I think was the real key guy in the whole sequence of pitchers," Mainieri said. "He came in and dominated the game for the time that he was in there but everybody came in a did a great job. Hunter Newman, Parker Bugg, Jessie Stallings, a lot of guys did a great job and its a good team win. I'm glad we won this game as we get ready for a tough series at Texas A&M."

The series against the Aggies starts Thursday night at 6 PM.
