NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

An SUV struck and killed a woman riding a bike in the Pontchartrain Park area during a hit-and-run incident.

It happened around 7:30 p.m. in the 2900 block of Leon C. Simon Dr.

The victim's cousin said she was behind the 29-year-old woman, identified as Monique Massey, riding westbound in the right hand lane when a black SUV-type vehicle with tinted windows struck the victim's back wheel, causing her to flip over the vehicle and fall to the ground, according to New Orleans police.

EMS transported the woman to the hospital where she later died.

Another witness who saw the crash tried to catch up to the vehicle but lost it westbound on Leon C. Simon.  Neither of the witnesses were able to get anything further on the license plate or the model of the vehicle.

Police believe the vehicle has heavy to moderate damage to the front passenger bumper, hood of the vehicle, and possibly the front passenger windshield smashed.

The investigation is ongoing.

This is the 15th traffic fatality in New Orleans this year, compared to four at the same time last year. Massey was the first bicyclist killed in a traffic accident in the city this year.
