ALGIERS, LA (WVUE) - A west bank couple says they dodged water from a leak steps from their front door for more than a month. When they couldn't get answers, they turned to the FOX 8 Defenders, and within days, got results.
"This area was all flooded," Kathie Bennett said. Water leaking from a 2-inch water line covered the sidewalk in front of her Algiers condo.
"People couldn't walk. The lawn turned to mud," she said. It created a challenge for Bennett's husband, Lloyd, to get to his handicap parking spot. "Sometimes he would step on the root of a tree and jump over it, which wasn't too handy. Otherwise, we had to walk probably about 100 yards up the sidewalk to the street and then come back to it," Bennett said.
Bennett said the leak bubbled for at least six weeks, maybe longer.
"It bubbled up quite strongly and managed to flow probably about 90 yards down the way," she said.
She said they reached out a few times to the Sewerage and Water Board. When they couldn't get results, they turned to FOX 8. "Nothing happened until we called the FOX 8 Defenders," she said. Three days later, she said a four-man crew with the Sewerage and Water Board dug up a man hole and the sidewalk.
"These folks knew what they were doing, and they did it efficiently. They had the whole thing pulled apart and put back together within three hours," Bennett said.
Bennett is thrilled that water is no longer being wasted. The sidewalk is dry, and her family can come and go from their condo safely.
