ST. TAMMANY PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

A Pearl River man was arrested for the attempted murder of a police officer after he repeatedly punched and tried to run over a female St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s deputy on Thursday, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.

At about 1:20 p.m., the deputy was dispatched to 16th Section Road in the Pearl River area in reference to a suspicious person who was passed out in a car.

When the deputy arrived, she found 29-year-old John Blackledge, who appeared to be severely impaired, laid back in the driver’s seat of a white Nissan Sentra.

After asking him to get out of the car, the deputy was trying to pat him down when he pushed her into a nearby ditch and began punching her before running into a nearby wooded area. The deputy chased him, but Blackledge was able to circle back to his car. He then put the car in reverse and hit the deputy, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Other deputies arriving on the scene saw the car speed away and pursued it through Pearl River, with Blackledge driving on the shoulder of the roadway and at times driving against traffic. He crashed into another car before crashing into a ditch near Louisiana Highway 41. He tried to escape on foot but was quickly arrested.

Blackledge was arrested for attempted murder of a police officer and aggravated flight. He was also wanted on several warrants for narcotics violations.

The deputy was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.
