NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

Waze app engineers have plans to help motorists avoid speeding tickets.

They're implementing a new feature that will alert drivers when they top the speed limit.  You can customize the alert to appear either when the speed limit is reached, or when your speed exceeds the limit by 5, 10 or 15 percent. Another setting allows you to block all speed alerts.

The speed feature is already being used in more than a dozen countries. Waze engineers expect to bring the technology to the U.S. soon.

Currently, the app in the U.S. concentrates on warning motorists about traffic backup.
