NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

Plans move forward for a world class entertainment venue along Lake Pontchartrain.

New Orleans City Councilman James Gray is excited. For years, he has worked to revitalize his district.

“If you look at where we are in an absolute sense, there’s still a lot of opportunities in the East,” Gray said.

Tipitina's owner Roland von Kurnatowski is seizing one of those opportunities.

“To not have a lakefront-based hangout of sorts and destination, doesn't seem - something about that doesn’t add up,” he said.

The businessman wants to sink at least $12 million into the old South Shore harbor marina and will go before the City Planning Commission in May in order to get a conditional use permit.

New images show von Kurnatowski's vision, building an outdoor amphitheater, restaurant, bar, open-air market and a recording studio. He also wants to utilize a nearly 35,000 square foot pavilion.

“The activities that will go on in the pavilion can range from competitions, water based activities like fishing rodeos and corporate events and school events,” von Kurnatowski said.

Part of the business owner's motivation is to create an environment for families - a place he can bring his own daughter to enjoy Lake Pontchartrain.

“I think this is a viable site that we just need to breathe a little energy into it,” von Kurnatowski said.

If approved by the city, that little bit of energy will go a long way.

“Oh I think it'll bring in people from all over the world," Gray said. "I mean, this is going to be one of the spots you go to, when you come to New Orleans.”

Roland von Kurnatowski already signed a 50-year deal to lease the 19-acre property from the Orleans Parish non-flood protection asset management authority. The deal calls for him to pay $50,000 a month in exchange for the site.
