NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

A New Orleans man was shot Wednesday afternoon while trying to sell shoes at his campus apartment, according to police.

The incident occurred at 1:25 p.m. in the 7000 block Press Drive on the campus of Southern University at New Orleans.

The victim, a 21-year-old man, told police he received a call from an acquaintance who wanted to buy tennis shoes from him.

The acquaintance and another suspect arrived at the location and attempted to steal the shoes.

The victim told police he then tried to stop the suspects and one of them pulled out a gun and fired two shots, striking him once in the left armpit.

Police said that’s when the victim grabbed his own gun and fired a shot back at the pair as they ran off.

Thursday, students reacting to the shooting said it was disappointing to hear someone had a weapon on the gun free campus.

“We're on a college campus and that is the part where I disagree. You shouldn't be on campus with that, there are other people's lives that you're putting in danger by having that so I don't agree with that at all,” Ashton Loyd, a student at the college, said.

University leaders couldn’t comment on whether the student who had a gun on campus would face any repercussions.

Police have not released information on a possible suspect.

The victim was transported to University Medical Center where police could not confirm his condition.
