NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

An armed man robbed the Maple Street Book Shop Thursday night, a first in it's over 50 years of doing business in New Orleans.

Confused and angry. That's how best to describe owner Gladin Scott the morning after the robbery.

“We've been here 52 years and we've never had a robbery like this before,” he said. “We're a business that caters to families and children and we have an environment that’s open and friendly. To have something like this happen, to have something like this happen is just unthinkable.”

On March 31, around 5 p.m., police say a man wearing an orange construction vest walked into the store. He approached a female employee, asking for a book about Einstein, but the conversation quickly turned violent.

“He put a knife to her neck and said 'I’m robbing you. I want the money from the register.' She was frightened to death,” Scott said.

Customers perusing other sections of the shop, didn't realize what was going on.

The man grabbed about $50 bucks from the cash register.  “He continued to hold the knife at her neck as he exited the building," Scott said.

Gladin Scott says business has been spotty over the past year. He even thought at one point he'd have to close his doors for good, but wanted to hold on. Every day's take makes a difference.

“For any business, particularly a small business, for this to happen to, is tragic,” Scott said.

He hopes it's the first and last time the bookstore is hit. A place, he points out, not even vandals during Hurricane Katrina touched.

Surveillance video not only shows the robber, but also the pick-up truck he was driving. It’s a silver Ford f-150 truck with a black ladder rack in the bed.

If you have any idea who he is, call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
