TANGIPAHOA PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

Louisiana State Police say a fatal crash on a highway in Tangipahoa Parish killed a 72-year-old woman and her 97-year-old mother.

Investigators say it happened Saturday, around 1:00 p.m. after Rita Adams stopped at a stop sign on LA 1064 at Rufus Bankston Road.

Troopers say when Adams began to turn her 2012 Toyota Camry west on the highway, a 2004 GMC Sierra traveling east hit her.

Both Adams and her mother Myrtis Jones, who was in the front passenger seat, were rushed to the hospital but later pronounced dead.

The other driver William Holton, 30, and his passenger Kayla Olah, 31, of Hammond, LA both suffered minor injuries.

State Police say all of the people involved in the crash were wearing seat belts at the time of the incident.

The crash remains under investigation and toxicology tests are pending. Impairment and speed are not considered factors of the crash.

Troopers remind drivers to always look and make sure it is clear before pulling into traffic or across intersections.

People who witness hazardous situations on the road are urged to call *LSP (*577) to report incidents to Louisiana State Police.
