NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

Louisiana State Troopers are investigating an accident in Schriever that left a motorcyclist dead. The incident occurred Sunday, just after 10:30 a.m. on Highway 24 near the Lost Bridge.

According to police, 68-year-old Ralph Jouclas of Thibodaux was driving a motorcycle south on Hwy 24 in the right-hand lane. He attempted to merge into the left lane, but nearly hit a vehicle, in the process. Afterwards, Jouclas sped up on the bike in an attempt to pull away. While accelerating, he lost control of the motorcycle and ran off of the left side of the roadway prior to hitting a drainage culvert. The impact caused Jouclas to be thrown from the motorcycle.

Police say that Jouclas sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner's Office.

Investigators learned that Jouclas was wearing a helmet, but it was not approved by the DOT, police say. It is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash. Investigators are waiting for toxicology test results.
