GRAND ISLE, LA (WVUE) -

A woman who was struck by a marked police unit while on the beach in Grand Isle was airlifted to University Hospital on Thursday, according State Police spokesman Trooper Nick Manale.

Police said two women were sunbathing on the beach just before 3 p.m. when the fully marked Grand Isle Police unit, an F-250 truck, was patrolling the area. As the truck approached, one of the women was able to jump out of the way, but the other woman was rolled over, Manale said. Troopers from State Police Troop C responded and the woman was taken via helicopter to the hospital with what are believed to be moderate injuries and broken bones.

There was no word on the woman's condition. The identity of the officer has not been released.
