Man dies after fall from Harrah's Casino escalator

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - The NOPD is investigating the death of a man who fell Thursday after trying to slide down an escalator at Harrah's Casino in the CBD.

James Edward Darst, 33, a native of Charlotte, N.C., died at the scene from injuries he sustained in the fall.

At about 3:41 a.m., NOPD Eighth District officers responded to the location and learned that Darst arrived at the casino with several coworkers at about 2:30 a.m. At about 3:32 a.m., Darst walked into the Masquerade Club, walked beyond a curtain and crossed a barricade before walking up an escalator to the second floor. He then tried to slide down the escalator handrail, falling to the first floor. Noise from the fall drew the attention of bystanders and the victim's coworkers, who contacted police.

Investigators do not believe foul play was involved.
